“Fifty Years of Change”

In the fifty years that preceded 1939, the people of Harkers Island had undergone many changes – as individuals, as families and as a community. The changes that took place during this period would be both immediate and long term, affecting not only their own lives, but generations to follow. The coming of electricity in 1939 was but one of the many facets of their lives that was to be transformed.
